The Cued American English Competency Screening-R (CAECS-R ©2002, TECUnit) provides a framework for assessing cue reading skills at the single word level. Scores are valid for two years.
The CAECS–R may be taken by any individual who wishes to assess his/her basic cue reading skills. In some states, the CAECS-R serves as a prerequisite test for State Level Assessments (also sometimes called a Quality Assurance Screening). A passing score on the CAECS-R is one of the prerequisites to register for the CLT National Certification Examination (CLTNCE). It should be noted that the CAECS-R assesses basic cue reading and does not inform one’s readiness for the voicing sections of the CLTNCE.
Administration: The CAECS-R is administered online by appointment. The candidate views single words presented two times each. The test is paused to allow the candidate time to write the word that was shown. The test is divided into four sections. In two of the sections, single words are cued without voice in order to assess the candidate’s cue reading skills. These two sections are rated for accuracy. In the other two sections, single words are presented without voice and without cues. These sections are used to assess the candidates ability to speech read and are used for feedback purposes only. The speechreading sections do not figure into the candidates accuracy rating.
Rating: The CAECS-R is scored by one rater. The score is calculated as the percentage of correct answers for the cue reading sections of the test. A passing score for the CAESC–R is 85% or greater.
Results: CAECS-R results are sent within four to six weeks of the test administration date.
Feedback: Following the CAECS-R, each candidate receives a rating and a basic profile of cue reading skills with error analysis to support continued cue reading skill development.
