College Coursework
(Some Pre-Approved; Some Requires Approval)
Many courses offered at an //accredited college or university// are pre-approved for CEHs. For institutions that follow a semester system, 15 CEHs are awarded per one (1) credit hour (e.g., a 3 credit course=45 CEHs). For institutions that follow a quarter system, 10 CEHs are awarded per one (1) credit hour completed (e.g., a 3 credit course=30 CEHs). Not all college coursework is pre-approved. Please refer to the list of pre-approved college course below.
List of Pre-Approved College Coursework
Many college and university courses are pre-approved for TECUnit CEHs. The following information applies only to courses taught at an accredited college or university. All courses in the following disciplines are accepted for Continuing Education Hours without the need to submit an application to the TECUnit in advance:
CSD | Communication Sciences and Disorders
EDUC, EDU, EDUX | Education
LING | Linguistics
PSY, PSYCH | Psychology
Undergraduate and graduate-level foreign language courses are also accepted with the same requirements. These include spoken and signed language courses taught at accredited college and universities.
Additionally, courses with a primary focus on the topics of interpretation and translation (between languages), ethics, audiology, and negotiation/conflict resolution will be accepted. These key terms must appear in the title of the course (e.g., Introduction to Social Ethics) and should not simply be tangentially related. For example, a course called Introduction to Genetics that includes a section on ethical considerations would not be accepted. Courses with titles containing the terms interpretation and translation must relate to language facilitation; the terms should not refer to analysis. A course titled Interpreting for Patients in Health Care Settings would be acceptable. However, the course Interpreting Social Media’s Impact on Society would not be acceptable.
Courses that are Not Pre-Approved
If you are considering a course and are unsure if it meets these criteria, you should reach out to our office prior to enrolling in the course. If the course isn’t pre-approved, you may submit it as an Unsponsored Event. You should request a copy of the syllabus from the instructor to submit with your application to the TECUnit. A syllabus from a recent previous semester is fine.
TSC holders are responsible for ensuring the acceptability of courses and events they intend to apply toward their CMP requirements.
NOTE: On July 21, 2021, the TECUnit Board of Directors voted to remove COM, COMM | Communication from the list of pre-approved disciplines. This doesn’t mean that you cannot earn CEHs for completion of colleges courses in this discipline. You will simply need to submit the course for review as an Unsponsored Event. If you enrolled in a college-level COMM Communications course prior to July 21, 2021, you may still apply it toward your CMP requirements upon its successful completion within that cycle.
Successful Completion
Students must earn a grade of C or better for the course to count toward acquisition of CEHs. Audited courses cannot be applied for CEHs. Courses must be completed during the applicable CMP cycle. An official college transcript is the only documentation accepted. Be sure to check how the institution will indicate your successful completion. Alternate measures of student success (e.g., Pass, Acceptable, Successfully Completed, Certificate of Completion) are not accepted for college-level coursework.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
The TECUnit is able to pre-approve certain coursework in specific disciplines offered by accredited colleges and universities. If your ASL course is not taught at an accredited college or university, you might still be able to earn CEHs by submitting it for approval as an unsponsored event.
-
The previous limit on CEHs that could be earned by enrolled students was lifted by the Board of Directors. A TSC holder who meets the criteria for successful completion may earn any number of CEHs in a given cycle as an enrolled student in approved college coursework.
However, a TSC holder may only earn a maximum of 20 CEHs/per cycle as the professor/instructor of approved college courses.
-
If the course uses a different prefix code, it is not pre-approved. Pre-approval requires an exact match of the course code or the course must meet one of the other listed criteria.
-
You can earn CEHs for other course, but they require approval. Submit the course as an Unsponsored Event.
-
College coursework is not required for the CMP. Rather, this is just another option. The TECUnit believes that appropriate training should count toward continuing education. With pre-approved disciplines, CLTs do not have to submit applications or fees for approval.
College coursework varies considerably in price depending on the institution. If this option fits your resources, it could to be an efficient way to earn many CEHs in a relatively short period of time.
-
It depends. Pre-approved courses that were successfully completed with a grade of C or better within the cycle may be applied to the CMP by sending a copy of your college transcript. Courses that do not fall in these pre-approved disciplines may not be submitted as Unsponsored Events once the course begins.
-
You may apply time transliterating toward your annual requirement of Work Hours.
You cannot earn CEHs for courses you transliterate. To earn CEHs for college coursework, you must be enrolled in the course as a student and earn a grade of C or better.
-
No. The only documentation accepted to demonstrate successful completion of an enrolled course is an official transcript.
